NOWASTERUR (a laborious poem) 2008
NOWASTEUR
No waste, re-use,
Answer me.
Not us, user won't.
West, East. Raw war
Note ruse. Use art.
Stem new.
Some one to steer,
Sure must ease tears.
Meet, team NOW.
Use, re-use, waste not.
‘NOWASTEEUR (a laborious poem)’ described as Video-Activism-Poem-Seating was conceived for a public sitting commission at IFEMA coinciding with Art & Design Fairs in Madrid. The purpose of the work was to create a piece that would evidence the culture of waste surrounding these type of events, whilst using them to create a public seating installation. Following our Performing Design: Design Performance series.
It was important for us that our film was not only a vehicle for documenting the whole process but that became an intrinsic part of the work. The installation was created following the script generated by the NOWASTEEUR poem.
The poem was composed using the ten letters needed to write 'NO WASTE' and 'RE-USE' (plus the 'M' which you obtain by flipping over the 'W'). The letters crafted as bags which could then be filled with discarded packaging materials. The poem was performed while collecting those materials thrown away by the different exhibitor and filling the 'letter-bags' up under the watchful eye of the camera. The poem was 'written' as a video piece which also documented the installation. The film was shot and edited by Zaunka.
